Tens of thousands of tourists flock to London each year to see Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Trafalgar Square. It is a capital city that is as hip as it is historical with over 200 free museums, over 140 parks, and over 50,000 shops and restaurants. Roman rule, Viking invasions, and battling kings make the history of London extensive and exhilarating. The city's position on the Thames River made it prime location as a port town and many battles were fought to gain control of the land. The people of London suffered through the Dark Ages and survived the plague. The city went through massive reconstruction after the Great Fire of 1666 and again at the end of World War II when bombs rained down on the city streets. Today, London is a cosmopolitan city where the past peacefully mingles with the present. |
